1: Training/Award in the field of Medical Education

1. Received Technical Cooperation Training Program (TCTP) Award from British      Govt. under which I had undergone 11 weeks training in Medical Educational Technology in Dundee, U.K., 14th April to 1st July 1989. (UKP

2. Undergone training in computers at Department of Computers, Dundee Institute of Technology, Dundee, UK (learned Disk operating Systems. Graphics and Statistical analysis using Computers) June 1989. (UK)

3. Earned thirty five (35) credit-hours in Continuing Medical Education (CME) at Montreal University, Montreal, Canada in Medical Education, August, 1991. (Canada)

4. Earned  thirty six (36)  credit hours in Item Bank Administration at Teaching and Learning centre,  Prince of Wales Hospital, Chinese University Hong Kong form 10th Nov to 14th Nov 2008.  This week long workshop imparted training in management of question bank at international level and to use it to enhance learning and assessment for undergraduate medical education.  Later used this expertise to serve as Item Bank Administrator (IBA) for two years at University of Dammam, KSA. (Hongkong)

2:    Medical Education and Technology

Several institutions including AIIMS have recognized the importance and necessity of Medical Education for advancement of medical sciences.  Realizing this, AIIMS New Delhi  set up its centre for medical education in 1988 which was named  KL Wig Centre for Medical Education & Technology (Popularly known as ‘CMET’). The CMET regularly conducts faculty development programs. I served as an adjunct faculty member since its inception till 2021  and contributed substantially to advancement of medical education and technology.

I. Contribution to Curriculum Planning at National Level (6 Workshops)

  1. National Institute of Health and Family Welfare: Meetings and workshops organized by the NIHFW for preparing training modules in Health and Family Welfare, especially meant for key trainers at the district/state level (22-23 April, 1997).

  5. Medical Council of India (MCI):  Served as a resource person for the National workshop on “Training teachers today for tomorrow’s needs” (1994), and a workshop on “Implementation of the revised curriculum” held at the MCI (7-8 March, 1995).
  6. Medical Council of India (MCI):   National Workshop on “Need-based curriculum for the undergraduate  medical education”, (28-29 August, 1992). I was actively involved in the preparation of the draft document, and a resource paper on “Teaching Methodology” and further, in drafting the Recommendations of this important workshop

III. Contribution to Medical Education Activity at Departmental Level, AIIMS

a.  Introduced new teaching experiments (practicals) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to bring the teaching curriculum to contemporary levels based on the recent advances and progress in Physiology. In an effort to gradually replace some animal experiments by clinically relevant human experiments, I have been instrumental in introduction of experiments on Autonomic function tests, Exercise stress test, Audiometry and Vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR)  tests, phonocardiography etc.

IV.  Development of scientific programs for learning and assessment:

1. Prepared tape-slide program on “Recording and Analysis of Human Electroencephalography (EEG)” which was  used as  Audio-Visual Learning Resource Material  in AIIMS from  1989 to 2004 for UG/PG teaching in Physiology. 

2.  Co-developer of a computer program called “QBERIA” (question bank, evaluation of responses and item analysis). This program was successfully demonstrated in Centre for Medical Education and Technology (CMET) for WHO-SEARO Workshop on “General Principles of Health Professional Education,” (14-19 October, 1996). [SEARO: South East Asian Regional Organization]. I played a pivotal role in the capacity of Sub-Dean Examination during 2001-2006.

V. Objectivisation of Examinations:    Implemented the administrative measures /reforms to improve objectivity  in the professional examination: This was done   at the level of the Institute by adopting administrative reforms for implementing Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and structured viva-voce examination across all UG and PG professional examinations.
