Visiting Professor, Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME), Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) New Delhi. Former- Professor & Head, Department of Phyisiology, AIIMS, New Delhi
A critical analysis highlighting the most innovative contributions

It is to be noted that Dr K K Deepak was awarded Maj. Gen SL Bhatia Oration Award, Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India (2007). Maj. Gen. S. L. Bhatia Oration Award is given to an Indian scientist of eminence who had substantially contributed to the research and development in the field of Physiology/Pharmacology or Allied Sciences through outstanding works carried out primarily in India. This is the highest award given by APPI.

His scientific, technological, innovative and pedagogic contribution have exponentially increased after the award.

A. Contribution to Autonomic and Clinical Physiology:

  • Setting up of Autonomic Function Lab in 1989: A diagnostic facility for assessing autonomic dysfunctions:

He set up of the first Autonomic Test Function (AFT) Lab of the country for providing patient care for diagnostic purpose.   The contribution has been documented in   annual reports of AIIMS since 1989 and in publications.  Now they have a large database of more than 21,000 human autonomic functions test records. It is a national heritage.  The database is being used as historical database for various clinical studies. Patients are mainly referred from Endocrinology, Neurology, Medicine, Gastroenterology, Oto-rhino-laryngology, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Cardiology  etc.

He got opportunities to set up such labs in several institutions like- BPKIHS, Dharan, Nepal; KGMU, Lucknow; VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi and NIMHANS, Bangaluru, Guntur Medical College, Govt Medical College Gadag, Karnataka, SMS Jaipur and others.

  • Setting up of Vascular Function Lab:

He set up yet another lab which was inaugurated by the Dean, AIIMS, Feb 2000 (Prof MC Maheshwari) and documented in annual report of 2001. Since then, the Vascular Function Lab in the Department of Physiology has been contributing in the field of patient care, education and research (see publications).

  • Developing central facility for HRV in the country:

He and his collogue developed a cloud-based computer software for analysis heart rate variability (HRV) at the AFT   lab and conducted a multicentric trial in country at five centers in the country with due support from DST and Information Ministry. Now this is functioning as centralized facility for HRV analysis [https://www.chrv.dic.gov.in/pages/index] [https://chrv.dic.gov.in] .

  • Clinical Physiology as regular service and teaching at AIIMS:

Through series of workshops this led to steady growth of Clinical Physiology at AIIMS and in the country. Besides pursuing Autonomic studies, during last 10 years, He encouraged and supervised the development of Intra-Operative Monitoring, Upper-GI manometry and electrophysiology etc. in their department. Now these are routine Clinical Physiology Services.

B. Medical Education & Health Professional Education:

Since 1990, he  has been serving as an active member of Centre for Medical Education & Technology.  Under my supervision as  Professor  In-Charge of CMET AIIMS New Delhi, CMET organized the following important Health Professionals development programmes since 2011.

  • Faculty Development Programs:

He has contributed to  series of orientation workshops and workshop in various topics such as Effective Teaching through Microteaching, MCQs and Item Analysis  Scientific writing, literature search, tips for publishing,  Managing procurement and purchase,  and Leadership and Management.

  • Skill Development Program for Resident Doctors and Nursing:

Regular workshops were organized for the Resident Doctors, Pool Officers, Ph.D. Students on Medical Education related issues.  For the first time a dedicated series of Orientation programs was organized  for  76 resident doctors of AIIMS to make them aware of their working responsibilities, privileges and skills required during residency program.  Now AIIMS has converted these program as mandatory for residents.

Under his supervision, The CMET  organized regular programs for College of  Nursing, AIIMS, New Delhi for their Educational Development.

Skill Training for Group D employees at AIIMS, New Delhi:

For the first time at CMET, he initiated  a capacity building training program for  1285 Group D Employees of AIIMS.  In all 110 trainers were pooled from twelve general sections of AIIMS, New Delhi. It was conducted from August 2011 to January, 2012 in 31 batches.

  • At National Level:

A.  Contribution to Examination process and National Medical Commission (New body in place of MCI): Currently he is serving as Dean (Exams) at AIIMS, New Delhi. He is responsible to conduct the National levels examination for Higher degree admission (MD/MS and equivalent) to all AIIMS and other institutes of National Importance (INIs).

Earlier he served as Sub-Dean examination (2001 onwards) and as Prof in charge (Exams) at AIIMS New Delhi. He initiated efforts to transfer PG entrance exams to a National Body (NBE), which got shaped into NEET-PG. • Social outreach programs and contribution to health and fitness:

On several occasions, he appeared at  Doordarshan TV  to cover physiology related to health and fitness. he conducted several programs for school children.

He served as Chairperson for the Expert Committee which prepared the  Age Appropriate

Fitness Protocols (2020) which were launched by our Hon’ble PM Shree Narendra Modi   on 24th Sept 2020 (https://fitindia.gov.in/).

  • At International Level:
  1. Skill Training for Physiologists at SAARC  level:
    • He initiated regular (every December) organization of International Workshop on Techniques in Physiological Sciences (TIPS series) for SAARC nations at AIIMS, New Delhi; since 2015. [Completed 6 such workshops ( www.tips2020aiims.in)  ].
  2. Contribution to Question Banking at International level:
